Project Brief
- The clients are my girlfriend's parents, Robert and Veronika Isler. They are a middle-aged couple originally from Switzerland, currently living in Hamilton. Robert works as a Psychology/Neurophysiology lecturer as well as a Road Safety consultant, while Veronika practises privately as a Clinical Psychologist.
- Basically, the clients were looking to demolish the existing house on the site and build a new bach-like residence, which would initially be occupied intermittently and then become more permanent and possibly a place to retire. They both have stressful jobs in Hamilton and love to escape to the bach for some peace & relaxation.
- They wanted to spend a maximum of $500000, less if possible but could be convinced to spend more for certain design features. Wish it to be not too flashy due to the inexpensive houses in the rest of the community, and they do not want theirs to stand out, and be a potential target for burglars while they are away. Security is therefore also an issue.
- The family love outdoor living, this definitely needs to be factored into the design. The entire building is to be small and manageable, with built in storage, fairly open-plan in a modern, minimalist style, but not too extravagant.
- The view is very important, and is the reason the Islers fell in love with the section in the first place. The house is to be a place to appreciate the view from, and the landscape has its own beauty that needs to be complemented and not overridden. The building must fit into its surroundings, have a natural feel and blend into the environment.
- Also it is very important to the client that the structure is eco-friendly and sustainable, as the clients have a strong environmental conscience. Solar heating, natural materials, waste management, passive solar design, are all features to consider.
